Can Your Food Habits Spoil Your Sleep?

How we think is one way of looking at whether or not there is a cure for insomnia. The old saying ‘if you think you can or think you can’t, you are right.’ So many of our sleeping habits are controlled by the day-to-day minutiae of our lives. The treatments or possible cures for insomnia come in several forms. The primary cure is to have a close look at your lifestyle, your life, your family, and friends. These unbeknown to an individual impact on private thoughts and cause tensions that leave you wondering why you feel as you do, with no obvious answer. The ‘can’t put your finger on why you feel as you do’ feeling.

Something that is overlooked I believe is the effect that diets or foods have on the amount or quality of sleep an individual gets. Having taken considerably more interest in foods of late, it has become apparent to me that what I eat appears to affect how well I sleep. In the course of endeavoring to lose weight, I noticed how much better I slept at night after dining out with family. The foods of the meal I considered, given that everything else was the same, had to be the reason.

Research has shown that some foods have more Tryptophan or melatonin in them than others. Tryptophan is an amino acid that assists in the production of serotonin or melatonin. These two hormones play a part in assisting the body to relax or sleep. Foods that have increased amounts of tryptophan are beef, cherries, yogurt, bananas, and milk. We all know the old recipe for inducing sleep is that of hot milk and honey. This has been passed down the generations because it is believed to work. The previous generations certainly did not know about chemicals and hormones in those days, but they obviously got it right, milk is indeed one of the high tryptophan foods so they were right!

Avoiding these foods before going to bed could assist in sleeping. The likes of alcohol, coffee, and heavy meals ate an hour or so before going to bed are at the top of the list. I try to avoid coffee after three in the afternoon, keeping the daily intake to three cups a day. Whether it helps or not there is no definitive answer but it all comes down to the power of the mind. People like eating chocolate and sweets in front of the television during the evening. This is not a good idea if you want a good night’s sleep. The foods contain sugar or sugar derivatives; sugar is an energy giving substance. It is not the ideal substance to be ingesting before bed no matter how much you love it! After spending the day watching your foods and including those considered to help insomnia, give your self a chance, try a warm bath an hour before bedtime and drink the warm milk and honey. Clear your mind of the day’s stresses and enjoy a good nights sleep!

The Magimix Food Processor

It can be difficult to review kitchen equipment. Everyone has their own little idiosyncrasies when it comes to cooking and preparing food. What one person likes, another hates. When it comes to the topic of food processors, a whole new debate opens up between cooks everywhere. On the one hand, there are the traditional conservatives who believe that food should be prepared manually by the cook. Touching your ingredients is an important part of cooking. On the other hand, there are modernists who believe that man builds things to improve himself. Like the fork and knife, the food processor is the next logical step in the kitchen. It is hard to disagree when you get the chance to use the Magimix Food Processors.

The Magimix range first came out thirty years ago right at the beginning of the 80s. Considered revolutionary at the time, it is now hard to imagine a modern kitchen without a food processor. Like all tools, the food processor was designed to make life easier for man, and on this front, the Magimix does not disappoint.

There are several versions to choose from so this review will cover the basic functions which are common to all the models. For a start, things are kept simple. There are three buttons that allow access to all the functions. The motor automatically adjusts the power as you process so that you don’t have to worry about breaking it with a particularly tough vegetable or piece of meat. The processors all come in a range of different colors so you can choose one in keeping with your own taste.

When you first start using the processor you will be surprised at how efficient it is. Equipped with an ultra-quiet commercial-grade motor, the processor comes with a 12-year guarantee and all the parts come three years each. Not bad when you consider some of the models available on the market. There are three bowls with each processor – Main, Midi, and Mini – that allow the user to process food at different levels depending on what you’re making. The Midi bowl is designed for shredding and slicing and the Mini bowl is perfect for small quantities of food and comes with its own unique blade.

How does it perform?

A lot of TV chefs have been using Magimix for years and with good reason: it does what it says on the tin. Unlike other processors, it isn’t fiddly and with three buttons to control every function even a child could use it (though this is not recommended!). Quiet, compact, and easy to place out of the way when finished with, the Magimix trumps the competition by making the cooking process as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. It is also easy to clean, banishing those nightmares of spending hours trying to get cake mix off a hard-to-reach part of the processor.

Whilst this processor is generally a little more expensive than the average competitor, the price is more than reflected in the quality and ease of use. If you buy online then you’ll often find purchasing a Magimix a lot cheaper than you would expect. Cooks should head over to Go-Electrical if you’re looking to pick one of these beauties up at an affordable price.

Eat and Lose Weight

Nutrition and Diet

There are two words often confused when it comes to eating and losing weight: “Nutrition” and “Diet”. Both words go hand in hand when it comes to the desire to eat and lose weight. It’s important to consider whether the prescribed diet is nutritious enough to satisfy hunger and provide good health. Substantively, dieting without considering nutrition becomes an exercise in futility.

Most people who rarely need to diet or lose weight follow a fairly regular pattern of eating habits. They know what they like to eat and can eat anything within rational proportions without worrying about calories, gaining weight, or worse, poor nutrition. Nutrition and diet, although not synonymous, are related when it comes to the human body. Generations of human bodies with the poorest diets suffer maladies and slow mental capacities as a result. The ability to identify nutritious food is important in order to live “diet regimen free”. Attitude plays the greatest role in how successful an individual will be in order for them to eat and losing weight.

Eat Well, Eat Hardy

The presentation of various dishes at the table makes all the difference in how appealing they will be to the appetite. Make meals an adventure in culinary innovation. Choose only the freshest fruits, vegetables, fish, poultry, meats, and dairy products. Freshness is key to making foods more appealing. Try to combine healthy foods in a more artistic manner. Hunger sated by bland, insipid meals does nothing to inspire one to eat well. Select the brightest green vegetables to coordinate with fish or other main course dishes. Don’t forget that freshly cut herbs added to vegetables enhance their flavor.

Example: Try a simple side dish of green beans with freshly chopped tarragon or dill added for a new twist. The same method applies to fruits and dairy foods. Fresh mint can be enjoyed on fruit compotes as well as in teas and in quick milk smooches. As well, seasoning and spices are not limited to use for baking. Add cinnamon, chili, cumin, or curry to rice dishes for extra flavor. Remember, creativity helps make meals that allow an individual to enjoy what they eat and lose weight as an added bonus.

Eat and Lose Weight without Feeling Deprived

Deprivation is one of the most prevalent reasons for difficulties when trying to lose weight. Don’t deprive yourself. Revive yourself with a creative culinary adventure.
